Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine, Ricky Skaggs’ 1981 Epic Records debut, brought renewed vitality and prominence to a sound that had been somewhat subdued by the commercialization of the Urban Cowboy fad. Released to radio in March of 1981, “Don’t Get Above Your Raising” – ironically, a tune written by bluegrass music founding fathers, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs – became the first single to introduce a young Ricky Skaggs to a mainstream country music audience, setting a neo-traditionalist movement into motion. In fact, renowned guitarist and producer Chet Atkins once credited Ricky with “single-handedly” saving country music.
The album not only produced chart-topping #1 singles “Crying My Heart Out Over You” and “I Don’t Care,” but resulted in Skaggs’ induction as the Grand Ole Opry’s 61st member, the youngest ever to be inducted at the time, as well as an award for New Male Vocalist of the Year from the Academy of Country Music (ACM) in 1982, respectively. Now, more than 25 years later, Skaggs is proud to offer Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine on his own Skaggs Family Records label as the second installment in a ReIssue Series, including a bonus retrospective DVD which features Ricky Skaggs, in his own words, reminiscing about the making of this timeless masterpiece. Skaggs’ influential country recordings paired with in-depth retrospectives are sure to become fast collector’s items!
